DJ Dalmatian is a supporting character in 101 Dalmatian Street. He is one of Delilah and Doug's 99 puppies and 101 Dalmatian Street's resident musician. Donning wireless headphones, DJ frequently plays his electric keyboard for musical numbers or ambience, though he is capable of playing other instruments such as makeshift drums, bongos, and the tuba. His name comes from the abbreviation for the term "disc jockey."
Development and design[]
In the first draft of the series bible, DJ's name is listed among other names for the Puppy Ensemble. However, a tuba-playing puppy named Dvorak is also proposed here, likely an early version of DJ. In the final series, the name Dvorak would be used for a background puppy.
In concept art, DJ is shown to have a much older appearance and larger nose compared to his final design. He also has a standard collar with a music note tag. DJ is later given a more youthful appearance, with wired headphones.
In his final design, DJ has all-black, rounded ears with white spots at the tip of each. He also has two spots on his forehead. The tips of DJ's paws are black. He now has wireless headphones and a square button on his collar that he uses to play music as seen in "The Dog House." His eyes are usually half-closed to showcase his cool, laid-back personality.
Background[]
DJ is a relaxed and mellow Dalmatian and often plays music for scenes, providing backup for "Dolly's Rap," "Dogs Are Out For Summer Sun," "We're Sending You Love" and "It's a Prank."
DJ makes his debut along with many of his other siblings in "Boom Night." He often has background appearances in later episodes, such as "Winter Funderland" and "Poetry Scam." DJ's first speaking role is in "The Woof Factor," which reveals that he can play the tuba. In "The Dog House," he is teamed up with Dolly, Da Vinci, and Triple D to create an artificial human to avoid pest control. DJ's most notable appearance is in "Dotty Dancing," where he teaches Dylan how to dance after being invited to Portia and Spencer's party.
