Da Vinci Dalmatian is a supporting character in 101 Dalmatian Street. She is one of the 99 puppies among Delilah and Doug. As her name suggests, she is an artist, and is often seen painting.

Character origins

In early concept art, Da Vinci was meant to be taller and thinner, appearing much older than how she ended up looking. She is also given tufts of fur on the top of her head, resembling hair. Other concept art shows Da Vinci with a shorter and stouter appearance. Some elements of her concept art are carried over to her final design, including her bandana and her large spot over her right eye.

Later concepts show that Da Vinci would have been one of the younger pups, similar to Deepak and Delgado, while other show her around the age of Dawkins and DJ. One concept shows her wearing a hat. In addition to normal dalmatian spots, she is given coloured spots to reflect her artistic personality. The colours of her spots range from hot pink, teal, blue, and orange. One coloured spot on her ear resembles a paw print.

Nearing her final design, Da Vinci's coloured spots changed to softer colours, including blue, green, purple, light pink, and orange. Spots of green paint are seen on her teeth, and her right eyebrow is also green. She also has an two orange spots on her left cheek. Her paw print mark is now on the top of her head.

Da Vinci's final design features a brighter colour palette consisting of pink, orange, red, blue, and purple. Her bandana is now hot pink, her tail is red, and her tongue is blue. Her right lash line is also given a blue outline, to match with her blue eyebrow. She is also shown wearing her bandana over her muzzle, as seen in the series' intro.

Like many of the other dalmatians, Da Vinci debuts as a background character in "Boom Night." Her first speaking role is in "Poetry Scam," where she paints Dolly's cone to make it look more appealing. She also has brief appearances in "The Woof Factor" and "Long Tongue Day."

Da Vinci is given a larger supporting role in "The Nose Job." In the episode, she is suspected by Pearl for vandalizing the statue in the park. She later helps Dolly break Diesel out of jail after he is accused. Despite being relevant to the plot of the episode, she isn't given any lines.

In "Doggy Da Vinci," Da Vinci's largest role in an episode, she paints t-shirts that cause a sensation amongst the humans of Camden. Dylan and Dolly use the money from the shirts to repair a hole in a wall in the backyard of 101. However, Da Vinci is upset after she learns that she isn't being credited for her work. Dylan and Dolly ultimately apologize, and let her use a newly-fixed wall in the backyard as a canvas for her work. The episode shows that Da Vinci is schizophrenic, as her vision is blurred and voices echo when she gets overwhelmed. The episode also shows that Da Vinci signs her artworks with a "D" that resembles a paw print with "V" inside of it.

After "Doggy Da Vinci," Da Vinci would become largely absent in subsequent episodes, save for occasional non-speaking cameos.

Notes

• Da Vinci is named after Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist.
• In earlier episodes of the series, Da Vinci's tongue is a regular pink colour. However, the colour of her tongue is changed to blue starting with "The Woof Factor."
• Graffiti and art supplies can be found in the Dalmatian household, most likely belonging to Da Vinci.
• Several dubs give her a male voice, probably because she's mistaken for a male there. Examples include European Spanish, Danish, and European Portuguese.
• The black spot located next to her right eye has a tendency to be missing in-between scenes.
• Her face pattern resembles Patch as they both have a big black spot around their right eye. However, Da Vinci's spot is bigger, reaching to the corner of her head and beyond level of her eyebrows.
• As confirmed by series creater Miklos Weigert, Da Vinci is on the autism spectrum.
